The Arab Cycling Federation has announced that it will hold its electoral General Assembly to elect a new president for the upcoming 2024–2028 term in the Sultanate of Oman during the first week of September.
For the first time since its founding in 1975, the federation has also decided to introduce a new position that allows a woman to serve as Vice President in the upcoming term. This move is part of a broader strategy to empower women and enable them to contribute to the federation’s development plans. Additionally, the federation will organize the “Road Championship” in Iraq at the end of October and the “Mountain Bike Championship” in Tunisia at the beginning of November, with alternative host countries in place in case of any changes to the hosting schedule.
These decisions were made during a meeting held today in Sharjah, chaired by Sheikh Faisal bin Humaid Al Qasimi, and attended by vice presidents, the secretary-general, and members of the board of directors.
Counselor Ismail Salem Al-Hosani, Secretary-General of the federation, stated that the meeting also discussed the possibility of collecting specific participation fees for championships, issuing regulations in this regard, and circulating them to member states. The federation also aims to provide all necessary support for Arab federations hosting upcoming championships.
Al-Hosani also announced that Somalia’s membership was approved, bringing the total number of member federations to 20. He mentioned the possibility of bringing in non-member federations such as those of Djibouti and the Comoros, with plans to engage in discussions about their potential membership.
He noted there is consensus on Sheikh Faisal bin Humaid Al Qasimi continuing as president of the Arab Cycling Federation due to his significant efforts since taking office in 1997 and the notable progress the federation has achieved under his leadership. He emphasized that the upcoming elections will be transparent and conducted according to the federation’s bylaws, with full details regarding the presidency to be announced soon.
On the sidelines of the meeting, honors were presented to Dr. Mohamed Wagih Azzam, former Vice President of the Arab Federation and former President of the Egyptian Federation; Abdullah bin Ali Al-Wathlan, second Vice President and former President of the Saudi Federation; and Dr. Reema Mohamed Al-Hosani, Chair of the Medical Committee and second Vice President of the Arab Cycling Center, in recognition of their outstanding contributions in recent years.
